Resurrection – the Crux of the Gospel
Text: 1 Corinthians 15
Easter morning is a good time to remind ourselves about the main theme of the gospel – the Risen Christ! Yes, the resurrection of Christ is the pillar on which our faith is anchored. Here is how Paul summarized the gospel which we have believed:
“For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.” Verses 3-7
Because He lives, we can face eternity with hope, verses 12-19
Paul’s argument is simple: that Jesus rose from the dead is guarantee that we shall all be resurrected too on the last day. Because he lives, we can face eternity. Oh how true this rings: “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.” Faith in Christ isn’t only good for this world; it is equally profitable for the life to come (1 Timothy 4:8, 6: 17-19).
A glorious new body, verses 35 – 46
The day of resurrection is going to be a day of glory. Our corruptible bodies will be raised incorruptible. We shall put on our celestial body – which can not be corrupted by sin, disease or death! A body that can inherit the kingdom of God. This is the hope of Christians.
Death is swallowed up in the final victory, verses 50-58
Oh, yes, one day, the trumpet is going to sound! Then the dead shall be raised, and we who are alive shall be changed in the twinkling of an eye. And then death shall be swallowed up in victory. All because Jesus lives. “The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (vs. 56-57).
