Peace in a troubled world
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” Romans 14:17
God has called us to peace even in the midst of a challenging world. Peace is reflective of a life under the kingdom of Christ. It is a gift that Christ gives to all who belong to him. John 14: 27, John 16: 33. The blessings of peace come to us in different forms, and here are some of them…
Peace with God: Life of unbelief and sin is state of enmity with, and alienation from, God. In this sense, every sinner or unbeliever needs reconciliation with God. This is the peace that opens the door to all other forms of peace. It is the peace that only Christ can bring to every soul. The peace that leads to eternal life Romans 5: 1, John 3: 17-18, 2 Corinthians 5: 18-21, 1 Peter 2: 9-11
Peace with self: I forgive my self because he has forgiven me. I live in harmony with myself because He has reconciled me to Himself. It doesn’t matter what our past has been or what our current circumstances are, we love ourselves because He has first loved us, and called us accepted in the beloved. Ephesians 1: 3& 6; 1 John 1: 8-9; 1 John 2: 1-2; 1 John 3: 18-21.
Peace with others: God mandates us to live at peace with each other, as much as possible. Romans 12: 18, Hebrews 12: 13-15. It’s our responsibility to live at peace with one another, and to reconcile others.
Peace abundant: Peace also means freedom from fear and agitating passions. It involves ‘shalom’, serenity, abundance, fullness, wholeness, total well-being. God is a God of wholeness and prospering abundance. God’s desire is for our well-being in every area of life, 1 Thessalonians 5: 23, 1 Corinthians 7: 17, 3 John 2. This kind of peace comes, among other things, from fellowship with God through prayer, the Word and communal worship (Philippians 4: 5-8, Mark 4: 35- 41).
